In this article we a will discuss at home treatments you can try for common causes of lower back pain and sciatica. If you are in bad pain, or these at home treatments aggravate your condition, schedule an appointment with a chiropractor near you.

Lower Back Pain and Sciatica can be caused by muscle spasm, spinal joint arthritis, disc degeneration, or inflammation caused by an injury to tissues surrounding your area of pain.

These problems can occur suddenly or slowly over time, little by little, especially in the case of spinal joint arthritis and disc degeneration.

The good news is, that for most people, restoring and maintaining health and flexibility to the muscles, joints, and discs of your back, will not only give you relief, but will help your back last longer, allow you to be more active, and even avoid unnecessary suffering and pain as you age!

Below are some treatments I have patients do at home to compliment and support the care we provide in our office. If these chiropractic treatments at home for lower back pain and sciatica help you, GREAT!

If you are not getting relief or want to know, specifically, what is causing your pain, we can help. Chiropractic treatments in our office include starting with an exam, x-rays and any other appropriate tests to provide an accurate diagnosis, which leads to faster, longer lasting relief for lower back pain and sciatica.

Chiropractic Treatment of Lower Back Spasms

Many people have lower back pain and sciatica from poor posture and tight muscles. This can happen little by little and day after day from repetitive activities. It can also happen suddenly while aggressively performing activities you have not done in a while or when you over do it, by lifting something wrong or too heavy.

If you have muscle spasms, here is what you can try or need to be aware of to get relief:

  • Rest: Do not put any unnecessary stress on the muscles, get in the most comfortable position. Pain is a great teacher of what does and does not work.

  • Water: Dehydration can cause muscle spasms. Make sure you are drinking water, that is the oil that lubricates the muscles.

  • Electrolytes: Being low on electrolytes can cause muscle spasms. Electrolytes help your cells retain water.

  • Ice: I always suggest starting with ice, 15 minutes on, 40 minutes off, as many rounds as you would like. In the beginning try for at least 6 rounds a day. This works great for most people. For more chronic issues, after you have tried ice, some people find heat makes their muscle spasms feel better. Some people try alternating, if you do, always end with ice. Caution, heat can feel relaxing, but as your back cools it can start to spasm more. This would be another indication that ice is for you.

  • Stretching: We do not suggest stretching or pulling on muscles that are in spasm. Muscle in spasm do not relax and lengthen, they usually tighten when they are stretched. However, once the spasms subside and are reduced to tight and stiff muscles, then we are big fans of responsibly introducing basic and very light stretches as a chiropractic treatment for lower back pain and sciatica.

  • Medication List: Check your medication list with your pharmacist. There are many medicines that have cramping as a side effect.

  • Kidney Stones: See you doctor if you have a history of kidney stones or feel kidney stones may be the cause of your lower back pain.

If you do not get relief from following these steps, this would be when you would want a chiropractor for an in-office evaluation and treatment. They will take the time to make a wise diagnosis based on all the different factors that may be involved and provide care to restore health and relief to the affected area.

Chiropractic Treatment for Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

If you have tried reducing muscle spasms and have not found relief, it may be the lower back that is causing the pain, muscle spasms, and even sciatica.

Here are common causes of lower back pain and sciatica:

  • Poor Posture, Lack of Flexibility, Weak Core, Never Learning how to Keep Your Spine Healthy: These are basically the root cause of all spine, lower back, and sciatica problems.

  • The most important being "how to keep your spine healthy. You can improve posture, improve flexibility, and strengthen your core in weeks, however if you let your spine go, you can't get it back to where it was years ago, you have to start with the one you have right now and go from there. Many people are inactive and living with pain because they have never learned chiropractic treatments to help them keep their spine healthy as they aged.

Here is how lower back problems lead to muscle spasm, lower back pain, and sciatica:

  • Stuck Joints: when joints aren't moving because of repetitive stress or trauma, they are surrounded in inflammation. This inflammation irritation joints, discs, muscles and nerves.

  • Arthritis: If joints remain stuck for days, weeks, months, and years they age faster and become arthritic. These joints in untreated can cause more irritation to muscles and nerves, while producing more inflammation and irritation to the spine and discs.

  • Disc Degeneration: Just like with arthritis, stuck joints cause the discs of the spine to age and degenerate faster. This can also contribute to irritation to muscles and nerves.

Here are chiropractic treatments for lower back pain and sciatica:

  • Ice: Ice is the best place to start, 15 minutes on, 40 minutes off, at least 6 rounds if you are in pain.

  • Stretching, Foam Rollers, Massage, Muscle Therapy: Always start slow! If the pain is not too bad and does not aggravate your condition, improving muscle health with these techniques will always play a major role in achieving faster, long lasting relief, while improving the health of your muscles. When it comes to sciatica the muscle you will want to focus on is the piriformis muscle. If the piriformis muscle is contributing to your sciatica, learning how to stretch and foam roller this muscle, in time, will produce great relief.

  • Strengthening: If you have gotten relief from ice and muscle therapy, then the next step would be to strengthen your core, so your muscles are healthier and stronger. This will provide your muscles what they require to do a better job at protecting your spine.

  • Chiropractic Adjustment: A good history, examination, x-rays (if necessary) with a chiropractor, is the fastest way to learn what is causing your muscle spasms, lower back pain, or sciatica. Chiropractic care has an amazing track record over the last 120+ years for being the safest, fastest, longest lasting form of relief for headaches, neck, back, lower pain pain, and sciatica.

An in-office chiropractic treatment will be beneficial for anyone who wants to ensure the healthy of their spine today, while avoiding the pitfalls of an unhealthy spine as we age.

Arthritis and disc problems are a silent disease that can take years for a person to experience the full negative impact on their lives. But, all you have to do is look at someone who has an unhealthy spine with arthritis and disc problems and you will see how debilitating and painful those problems can be in time.

Chiropractic is the best at analyzing and providing care to restore health to unhealthy spines, as well as, keeping spines healthy and lasting as long as possible. This is vitally important, because the health of you spine determines the health of the nerves that go through them.

If you are worried about your pain or unsure of where to start, and you would like to know what is causing the muscle spasm or pain in the first place, it would benefit you to find a chiropractor near you.

The Hidden Costs of Technology: Neck Pain, Headaches, and More

In today’s digital age, technology is an essential part of daily life. However, the prolonged use of smartphones, tablets, and computers can lead to chronic pain in the neck, upper back, shoulders, and even arms. Many people experience headaches, neck pain, and hand numbness without realizing that their technology habits are the root cause.

If you’re suffering from these symptoms, chiropractic care may be the solution you need. At Fresh Start Chiropractic in Linwood, NJ, Drs. Jennifer and John Fresh have over 20 years of experience helping patients find relief from pain caused by poor posture, stress, and excessive screen time.

Let’s explore how technology affects your body and why visiting a Linwood chiropractor could be the key to long-term relief.

How Technology Causes Pain

1. Text Neck & Constantly Looking Down at Your Phone

One of the biggest causes of neck pain and headaches today is “text neck.” This condition occurs when you spend hours looking down at your phone, placing extra strain on your neck muscles and spine.

On average, the human head weighs about 10-12 pounds, but when you tilt it forward at a 45-degree angle, the strain on your neck increases to nearly 50 pounds! This constant pressure leads to:

   •   Chronic neck pain

   •   Tension headaches

   •   Shoulder pain

   •   Upper back stiffness

   •   Arm pain and numbness

2. Sedentary Lifestyle & Lack of Movement

Sitting at a desk for hours without proper movement can cause:

   •   Muscle stiffness

   •   Poor circulation

   •   Spinal misalignment

Your body is designed to move, and when you sit for long periods without stretching or exercising, your muscles become tight and sore. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain, inflammation, and even nerve compression, causing hand numbness and tingling.

3. Improper Workstation Setup

Your computer and phone setup plays a major role in your posture and pain levels. An improper workstation can lead to:

   •   Forward head posture (putting extra strain on your neck)

   •   Rounded shoulders (leading to upper back and shoulder pain)

   •   Wrist and hand pain (caused by repetitive strain injuries)

A poorly adjusted chair, desk, or screen height can cause muscle imbalances and spinal misalignment, leading to chronic discomfort.

4. Stress from Social Media & Comparing Your Life to Others

Constantly checking social media and comparing yourself to others can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Stress often causes muscle tension, especially in the neck and shoulders, which can result in:

   •   Tension headaches

   •   Jaw pain (TMJ issues)

   •   Neck stiffness

   •   Upper back tightness

Chronic stress from constantly scrolling through social media can contribute to poor posture and muscle tension, worsening your symptoms.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

If you’re struggling with neck pain, headaches, upper back pain, arm pain, or hand numbness, chiropractic care can provide effective relief. At Fresh Start Chiropractic in Linwood, NJ, Drs. Jennifer and John Fresh specialize in treating conditions caused by poor posture, excessive screen time, and stress.

1. Spinal Adjustments to Correct Misalignment

Chiropractic adjustments help realign the spine, reducing pressure on nerves and restoring proper function to your neck, back, and shoulders. When your spine is in alignment, your body can heal naturally, relieving pain and improving mobility.

2. Postural Correction & Ergonomic Guidance

A Linwood chiropractor can assess your posture and provide recommendations to improve your workstation setup, phone usage habits, and daily movements. Simple changes, such as adjusting your desk height, chair support, and phone positioning, can prevent further strain and discomfort.

3. Relief for Headaches & Neck Pain

Many headaches stem from tension in the neck and shoulders due to poor posture and stress. Chiropractic adjustments can:

   •   Reduce muscle tension

   •   Improve blood flow to the head

   •   Restore proper nerve function

If you suffer from chronic headaches, chiropractic care is a natural and effective solution.

4. Treatment for Hand Numbness & Tingling

Hand numbness and tingling are often caused by nerve compression in the neck or upper back. Chiropractic care helps:

   •   Relieve nerve pressure

   •   Improve circulation

   •   Restore sensation and function

If you’ve been experiencing numbness, tingling, or weakness in your hands, a chiropractor in Linwood, NJ can determine the root cause and provide targeted treatment.

5. Reducing Stress & Tension

Chiropractic care isn’t just about physical adjustments—it also helps reduce stress. When your spine is aligned, your nervous system functions better, leading to:

   •   Improved relaxation

   •   Better sleep quality

   •   Reduced muscle tightness

If social media stress is causing tension headaches or neck pain, chiropractic care can help restore balance to your body and mind.

Does Chiropractic Care Work?

Many people wonder if chiropractic care is truly effective. The answer is yes! Studies show that chiropractic treatment helps relieve neck pain, headaches, upper back pain, and arm numbness by addressing the root causes of discomfort rather than just masking symptoms with medication.

Patients at Fresh Start Chiropractic in Linwood, NJ have experienced significant improvements in pain relief, posture, and overall well-being through chiropractic adjustments, postural training, and lifestyle recommendations.

Is Chiropractic Care Covered by Insurance?

One of the most common concerns about chiropractic care is affordability. The good news is that many health insurance plans cover chiropractic treatment for conditions such as:

   •   Neck pain

   •   Back pain

   •   Headaches

   •   Nerve-related conditions (e.g., hand numbness, tingling, arm pain)

At Fresh Start Chiropractic, the staff can help verify your insurance coverage and discuss payment options if you don’t have insurance.

How Can I Afford Chiropractic Care Without Insurance?

If you don’t have insurance, chiropractic care is still affordable! Many chiropractors, including Fresh Start Chiropractic in Linwood, NJ, offer:

   •   Flexible payment plans

   •   Discounted cash rates

   •   Affordable wellness packages

The cost of chiropractic care is often much lower than the long-term expense of medication, physical therapy, or even surgery. Investing in chiropractic treatment now can save you money and pain in the future.
